RJ45 Plug: common questions
Solid or stranded RJ45 plugs: which do I need?
Match the plug to the cable. Solid-conductor plugs pierce between the strands of a solid conductor, stranded plugs straddle the bundle. Using the wrong type can give an intermittent link that fails later.
Which category plug should I use?
Use a plug rated for the cable category, Cat5e through Cat8, since higher categories use tighter conductor geometry and load bars to keep pairs twisted to the contacts.
RJ45 modular plugs for field-terminating Cat6A cable, supplied in 100 packs. Five configurations cover solid and stranded conductors, shielded and unshielded cable, and both feed-through and inserter termination methods.
- Feed-through plugs — conductors pass out through the front of the plug so pair order can be checked before crimping, then trimmed flush. The fastest way to get a correct termination on Cat6A's larger conductors.
- Inserter (load bar) plugs — a separate guide holds the pairs in order for insertion.
- Shielded versions — maintain screen continuity on F/UTP and S/FTP Cat6A cable.
- Solid and stranded — match the plug to the conductor type of your cable.
For pre-terminated cable, see our Cat6A patch cables. For wall and panel terminations, see keystone jacks.
