RJ45 Plug: common questions
Solid or stranded RJ45 plugs: which do I need?
Match the plug to the cable. Solid-conductor plugs pierce between the strands of a solid conductor, stranded plugs straddle the bundle. Using the wrong type can give an intermittent link that fails later.
Which category plug should I use?
Use a plug rated for the cable category, Cat5e through Cat8, since higher categories use tighter conductor geometry and load bars to keep pairs twisted to the contacts.
Shielded RJ45 modular plugs for terminating Cat7 S/FTP solid cable, supplied in 20 packs. The metal plug body bonds to the cable's foil and braid screens, carrying shield continuity through to the jack.
- Fully shielded body — required for S/FTP cable; an unshielded plug breaks the screen at the termination and negates the cable's shielding.
- For solid conductor cable — matched to Cat7 installation cable.
- 20 pack
A note on terminology: Cat7 is an ISO/IEC class F specification whose official connectors are GG45 and TERA. These plugs terminate Cat7 cable to standard RJ45, which is what virtually every installation actually uses. See our Cat7 shielded patch cables for pre-terminated assemblies.
