Networking: common questions
What is the difference between a keystone jack and a keystone coupler?
A keystone jack terminates solid cable on 110 punch-down contacts at the back and presents an RJ45 jack at the front. A keystone coupler has an RJ45 jack on both sides and joins two patch cables with no punch-down. Both snap into the same keystone wall plates and patch panels.
Do I need shielded jacks, couplers and plugs?
Match the hardware to the cable. Shielded cable needs shielded jacks, couplers and plugs so the shield stays continuous through the link; unshielded UTP cable uses unshielded parts. We stock both across Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A and Cat8.
Can I use a Cat6 jack with Cat6A cable?
It will connect, but a link performs only to its lowest-rated component, so a Cat6 jack on Cat6A cable gives you a Cat6 link. Use jacks, couplers and plugs of the same category as the cable.
A DB9 female to RJ45 modular adapter in black, for carrying an RS-232 serial connection over standard Ethernet patch cable. It lets a serial console port reach a patch panel or a distant rack without a long dedicated serial cable.
- DB9 female to RJ45 — one 9-pin D-sub socket, one 8-position modular jack.
- Runs serial over patch cable — use ordinary Cat5e or Cat6 patch cable between two adapters, or into a structured cabling run.
- Black housing — standard molded shell with screw-lock posts.
Common in console server, network equipment management, PLC and point-of-sale work. Serial-over-RJ45 pinouts vary between equipment manufacturers — if your application requires a specific pin assignment, send us the pinout before ordering and we will confirm compatibility or build to your specification.
